Thanks for the quick reply and sorry for my slow reply.  For some
reason, I never received your email from the list; I just now found it
in the archives.

It's excellent to see writeable compressed files the day after asking
about them!  The page you mention says

    Modifying existing compressed files (apart from appending) and
    writing non-sequentially are not supported.

After reading that, I was about to ask about the possibility of
support for truncating compressed files.  But that seems to work, too,
which is great news for me.
