It's excellent to see writeable compressed files the day after asking about them! The page you mention says Modifying existing compressed files (apart from appending) and writing non-sequentially are not supported. After reading that, I was about to ask about the possibility of support for truncating compressed files. But that seems to work, too, which is great news for me.
