Greetings all,
Now that I have saved the "save-able" files with testdisk,
I need to run a free app (sans adware and spyware) on a second
windows 7 machine to extract the COA key from the bad HD, which
I am able to connect to the 2nd windows machine via a special
esata -> USB connector.
Problem is 2nd machine is unable to "see" the bad drive, as the partition
in question is not mountable.
The free SW probably is expecting the user to specify the drive
from which to extract the key, such as D: or E: ...etc.
I was wondering if anyone can add to testdisk menu a program to
extract the key, and incorporate the program into the testdisk binary?????
Failing that, I do not see how to reinstall win7 onto a new drive, and
validate the installation with MS, since it is going into the very same
computer where the drive failed.
Would I have to send the bad drive to MS in order to prove that it is
a fully legal installation??? I would not mind doing that, but I would
have to erase all the personal files I have saved in the Users directory
such as drawings, photos, letters, ....etc ... etc...
Would appreciate some helpful input on this.
Thank you kindly,
JD

Thank you Mykola.
Partition is not mountable.
I can only read it via testdisk, which does encounter errors
of bad MFT's.
But, I was able to save the WIndows Directory, and one user home dir
(which is important).
None of the links you provide answer the question :(

Can you mount partition in RO mode?
Anyway, seems product key is in the registry.

Just copy registry files and use, for example, hivexregedit to
extract your key:

As I mentioned, a second machine with win7 does not detect
the attached damaged drive in question, so,
how can I run chkdsk ??
Is it physical or virtual disk? Can you mount r/o? What exact
error do you have?
It is a physical drive.
The GOOD news is that

suggested I use latest testdisk.
It Worked!!!!! Well, it is still working .... and so far it
looks Grrrrrrrrreat!!!
It will take a total of 30 hours to finish copying half a TB of
files.
Thank you Ulf!!!!
Now that I have been able to extract my files using testdisk,
I have a question about re-installing my win-7 Ultimate 64-bit
using the
same COA Key as on the crashed HD.
Problem is I did not have that key saved anywhere :( :(
Is there a way to extract the key using testdisk? How???
Thanx a lot to all who have helped with this.
