Dear Hans,

Thanks for the information about \mathop.

Regarding the \max command. I checked again. There is not problem if you
don't use

\setupbodyfont[ams]

But with \setupbodyfont[ams] there is a problem. For example, the code

\setupbodyfont[ams]
\starttext

$x \max x$
\stoptext

prints a normal sized x followed by a small x (no max).

This time I checked carefully! Sorry once again that I had you spend some
time on \noalign. Thanks for all the help.

Have fun
