when tex comes with an error line like:

\font\blabla=funnyname      cannot find font

it means that either the font is not there, or another encoding is used

when pdftex at the last page says that it cannot open a font, it has 
already found the tfm file, which means that the pfb is probably on the 
system too. But, pdftex does not look on the system, but uses the map file 
to resolve the name, so in most cases it means that the map file is not loaded
