Since you don't groupe \yellow, the stopcolor ends up after a group; try
\startcolor[...] \stopcolor instead, or try [which is what we do currently]
\appendtoks \startcolor[yellow]\to\everystarttext
\appendtoks \stopcolor \to\everystoptext
