make a file: verb-raw.tex

\ifx\undefined\setupprettyTEXtype \input verb-tex \relax \fi

\gdef\setupprettyRAWtype%
   {\setupprettyTEXtype
    \def\prettyidentifier{RAW}}

\endinput

and put that one in the base path (run mktexlsr too) then, in cont-new.tex,
add

\installprettytype [RAW] [RAW]
\definetyping [RAW] [option=RAW]

Now, you aqre the happy user of a new verbatim filter [i can use a fast one
later]

\setupcolors[state=start]

\startRAW
\test test %%\ N This is \TeX
\stopRAW

\setuptyping[option=RAW]

\starttyping
\def\mathematics#1%         %%\ N  usage: \type {\mathematics{x^2}}
   {\ifmmode#1\else$#1$\fi}  %%\ N  becomes: \mathematics{X^2}
\stoptyping
