I never figured out the predefined font names either. You might try searching the type-*.tex sources to see if anything looks likely. For me, the names never seemed to match what I had on my system. Eventually I figured out (with much help) how to make my own typescripts and the heavens opened. It is easy to do if you have the font files you want and know what's in them. (Which are bold, italtic, etc). I like having control over the font definitions; much of the mystery is eliminated.
