After trying to execute xmltex (just to see if I had it) I once again ran into the problem of it not finding its files. (Still using the TeXLive distribution.)
Just on a whim I gried to use a DOS shell instead of cygwin/bash, and it worked... Then I tried texexec, and that worked too! :) I don't know why there were problems with cygwin (path syntax problems, perhaps?) but at least I'm happy it works. Now, in my extremely simple test file I get 11 repetitions of the string "(2)" at the beginning of my documenht. I wish I had payed proper attention when this problem was discussed a while ago...
