I wrote a font utility afm2pl for conversion of afm to pl/tfm. It is derived from afm2tfm, but preserves kerns and ligatures without the need for devious detours or virtual fonts. For text fonts, it is best used with texnansi encoding. I hope some of you are willing to try it out.
