I think the command is \NormalizeFontWidth. The pdfTeX User Manual uses it just once, before the title. I am not certain what the scope of the command is. Is it global? Is it intended for regular typesetting or just titles etc.? I will try it out in any case to see what the effect is. Thanks for the heads-up.
