I put in my ordinary mp files:-
---------------
input metafun ;
verbatimtex
..any required preliminary ConTeXt statements \setupbodyfont etc.
\starttext
etex

.. normal metapost

verbatimtex
\stoptext
etex
end
---------------
The assembly script needs a line like
export TEX=texexec
in it

Then the remnants of latex are removed and the btex .. etex bits are typeset using ConTeXt.

I hope this helps

If one looks carefully, one sees that a $ is missing. (I didn't looked carefully, but added a verbatimtex \bye etex TeX gave the right hint.) After inserting the $, it worked without a problem. But I'm still puzzled that there was a \end{document}, where did it come from?
