thanks for the example, but in my example the cow doesn't move at all when
"low" is added (or subsequently removed), which doesn't relate in any
obvious-to-me way to how "Thus" is moving up and down in your example.

I guess looking at the code for \placefigure would give a definitive
answer.  Another thing to do for another day.
