Replying to Pablo's message to bring the thread back together but @Jim:

I think you're right: the desktop shouldn't make difference so I'm not sure 
what I did wrong originally.

The VM I'm using is a VMware Fusion VM with a new install from 
"slackware64-15.0-install-dvd.iso". It all seems to work: both the pre-built 
binary from the distribution and a compiled on Slackware version (which comes 
out at a different size!).

I can send you the "compiled on Slackware" version if you think that might 
help, but it's easy enough to compile for yourself.
