Thanks, that does the trick, although maybe in a subtle way...
your technique avoids switching into vertical mode, and (as far as I can
tell) works because \midaligned creates an \hbox the width of the current
environment.

To add to this, for anyone who reads this in the future:
Hans emailed me off-list (thanks Hans!) and pointed out this would also
work:

Hi everyone et al et al et al et al et al et al et al et al et al et al
\blank[nowhite]
\midaligned{that means you}
%-----------------
