Looking for something else, I found Jim’s message from 2020

when Hans provided an example with \startspread and I failed to come up
with a solution for the float caption.
While “spreads” are “experimental and not official” since 2002, they
seem to work, at least if you don’t need float captions.
I guess using \externalfigure “plainly” with \placefloatcaption might be
a solution for Jim’s old problem.
