Ie the with-pdf can be rendered at arbitrary resolution, but the
with-png has a fixed resolution image.
You would need to avoid using bitmap, graymap or pixmap images in
your TeX to avoid the issue.
depends ... if you go for 150, 300, 600 dpi you're fine
and as rectangles scale nicely there are applications for bitmaps that
are very efficient
