\setnumber[footnote][-x] is helpful, regardless of where it is placed.
Does x depend on whatever?

compiling against latest from 2025.08.13 16:34 (the oldest I have) and
current latest (from 2026.07.29 11:46) with both MkIV and MkXL, I get
the same weird results.
I guess this might be a bug, but this is the first time I’ve been
exposed to such code, so others more knowledgeable have to take a look
at this.
