irr we had a feature to add characters in mkii but in mkiv / mkxl it
makes no sense (imagine some cjk font) .. you can put some invisible
text 5 meter in the margin

\llap{\starteffect[hidden]abcdef\stopeffect\hskip500cm}%
[nothing seen]
\samplefile{tufte}
\stoptext
(probably on time in a header or background or ...)
not something i like to waste time on
