Andrea, I'm not a real expert, but what I've understood: \strut is an invisible character with no width but the maximum lineheight (cont-eni, p. 72). TeX discards glue such as \vfill or \hfill at the beginning of horizontal or vertical boxes, so you have to fool it into believing there is something before your \vfill. You could have an empty \vbox, but \strut is the fastest and easiest way of achieving this.
