That was obviously the wrong diagnosis. Just lucky that the patient
didn't die.

Also interesting:

   \setuplayout[grid=yes]
   \hbox{\startformula x^2 \stopformula}

(I tried that because in grid  mode, the \startformula wraps the
body inside a \vbox)
