Thanks to Albrecht and Steffen for their quick and informative replies. I guess \setupfootnotedefinition isn't what I am looking for. It seems to mainly be a way to customize the footnote *numbering*, right? What I wanted to try was to put footnotes in the margin. My text has a lot of footnotes, and a few of them are absurdly long (no, I didn't write the book); the conventional layout results at several points in truly abominable pages, so I thought I'd try something unconventional. Guess I'll have to do it some other way.
