Clearly it should read

  "It is `criterion' rather than `criterium'."

rather than

  "It be `criterion' rather than `criterium'."

(I one-up'd Taco by making a grammatical rather than lexicographic
error.  Failure to proofread messages before sending them will be the
death of me yet.)
