You will probably have to adjust the default interlinespace
because that is what is used by the grid snapping routines:
\setuplayout[grid=yes]
\setupbodyfontenvironment[12pt][interlinespace=20pt]
\setupbodyfont[12pt] % re-activate

\dorecurse{4}{\input knuth \endgraf}
