we have kind of conflicting demands ... bibi directives as well as 
auto-bidi (using properties) is unaware of grouping

also, we can have \textdir directives and what should then have priority

it is no problem to have more 'bidi handling modes' but at some point 
choices have to be made by users: depend n bidi only, depend on textdir 
only, use (maybe onf of many) ways to mix bidi/textdir

best is that you and idris explore this area keeping 'usability' in mind
