Given Mojca's comments, have you considered luatex/mkiv instead of xetex? That will give you working and supported higher-level control of opentype fonts etc etc. It sounds like you're willing to experiment, in which case mkiv might be worth spending some time with. I typeset an acedmic journal with it as well.
