yes, as mkiv directly uses the afm/pfb files

nowadays i put such fonts in:

texmf-fonts/fonts/data/vendor/*

instead of the many paths; don't forget to run "luatools --generate" after installation; the data path is configured already in the minimals

you access such fonts by filename or fontname and they can have > 255 characters; no encoding, just simulated unicode
