I'm just wondering how TeX Gyre were generated, did they use some MetaType1 magic, or was it designed by hand. I've vague memories suggesting the former, but I can't find anything about this right now, nor I can find MataType sources of the fonts (if there are).
I'd like to use such technique for XITS fonts, since STIX didn't provide small caps, and I'm not into hand designing hundreds of LGC small caps.
