Dear Hans,
in a recent version of ConTeXt the \displaystyle seems to be "switched
off" inside \startformula in MKIV (\sum has no subscript):
\starttext
\startformula
P^{(α)} = \sum_{a\in{\cal G}} χ_a^{(α)}T(G_a),
\stopformula
\stoptext
In current version (tlcontrib's update to TL) and in MKII it works fine.
