Although the spec: interface (in addition to file: and name:) has fallback heuristics, simplefonts is more clever and does more extensive testing, But as with all heuristics, you can never be 100% sure what you get so in critical long term projects you can best use names or filename (and keep the files someplace backed up). It all depends on the situation.
