Perhaps (untested):

\definealternativestyle [BigFont] [{\setbodyfont [12pt]}]
\definealternativestyle [SmallFont] [{\setbodyfont [8pt]}]
\definehighlight [BigSize] [style=BigFont]
\definehighlight [SmallSize] [style=SmallFont]

\BigSize{Foo \SmallSize{Bar1}} \SmallSize{Bar2} Baz.
