the sample can be much simpler:
\starttext
\startMPcode
draw textext("some text");
\stopMPcode
\stoptext
This might be related to the issue that I reported about text scaling in
lmt_followtext
(https://mailman.ntg.nl/pipermail/ntg-context/2020/100573.html).
