The following example of equation alignment copied from An Excursion
is not reproducible under my context 2021.03.05 shipped with texlive
2021:

\startformula
\eqalign{
ax^2+bx+c &= 0 \cr
x &= \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a} \cr
}
\stopformula
\stoptext
Both ampersands are rendered literally.
Does anyone know how to properly typeset aligned equations?
