I do use also Gerben Wierda's installer of teTeX under Mac OS X 10.2.3. I upgraded a few days ago and noticed that \startfiguretext doesn't work anymore... and the error message is the same as the one Charles D. mentions in his message. Regarding the installation of a ConTeXt beta I am way too wary and a beginner to do it or to give any advice...
However \placefigure still works fine as one can see through the following example (you should replace "anyGraphic.jpg" with the name of a graphic file existing in the path):

\placefigure[right]{none}{\externalfigure[anyGraphic.jpg][type=buffer,he ight=.4\textheight]}
\stoptext
and the following doesn't work anymore...
\useexternalfigure[anyGraphic][anyGraphic][width=.5\textwidth, method=png, frame=off]

\input knuth
\startfiguretext[left][]
{none}
{\externalfigure[anyGraphic]}
