If the presentation style doesn't say \usemodule[pre-general], you have add this. After that, \presentationstep will be defined. Then you have to make sure that a Whatever button is defined and printed. That should (in principle) be everything you need. So if you use the same context version (current beta), remove all modified and temporary files and start from the clean example that Hans posted, this should work as it does here.
