This seems to be OK, except that you do not have the braces around the
expanded value. Try this: \expanded{\bTD[align={\XMLop{align}}]}. Note
also that \bTD ... \eTD must be used with
\defineXMLpickup[td]{\expanded{\bTD[align={\XMLop{align}}]}}{\eTD}
