no, the content comes in two-some, so

\startcombination[2*1] % or 1*2
  {content} {caption}
  {content} {caption}
\stopcombination
when all captions are empty, they are ignored; btw, combinations have 
recently be extended with vertial and horizontal alignments; remind me to 
document that -)
