You mean the little pictures (icons)? If you get the little red x, it usually means that the web server didn't respond within the browser's timeout.
It's hard to pin down because each version of IE (and Netscape and Mozilla for that matter) seems to change the default # of simultaneous connections they support and the timeouts for each connection. I have seen a problem using ntop over a slow link, because each icon is a separate pull from the ntop web server. But it's not consistent and a retry always fixes things. Could be that this screen - if you have lots of sessions and lots of icons is just swamping the ntop web server.
