Nobody is working on it that I'm aware of. Basically it doesn't fail for Luca or me...
The zlib folks thought it was some type of memory corruption in the malloc() chains, but the only way to catch that would be for somebody for whom it's failing to run under valgrind and catch it. The init.d/ script in the ntop source tree has a valgrind option, so it's possible - you'll need a current valgrind installed and then try /etc/init.d/ntop valgrind.
