WARNING WARNING WARNING

Doing this will update your .rrd files to a new version number and they WILL NOT be usable by the old rrd version.

This includes the standard myrrd shipping with ntop.

OK?  Understand?

YOU WILL LOSE DATA IF YOU TRY TO GO BACK!

WARNING WARNING WARNING

OK, that said you are still interested in sliding down the razor blade of life...

(1) Grab rrdtool 1.2.6 from Tobi's page - it's the only one I've tried

(2) Do the ./configure, make, make install dance.  I suggest sticking it somewhere other than your normal .../lib directory.  And I found I needed to use:

./configure --disable-rrdcgi --disable-perl --prefix=/devel
make
su -
cd ...
make install

(3) Patch ntop.  You need to adjust the configure/Makefiles to remove all references to myrrd.  There are also source changes required in plugins/rrdPlugin.c to rip out rrd_first, reflect the different format for rrd_graph() and the different location of the .h files.

(4) ./configure, make, make install ntop per usual.

I would be interested in feedback - some folks like the new look of the graphs, others don't...  I think they're just a bit sharper (better anti-aliased fonts), but that's the only benefits for ntop.

Notes

(1) I don't plan to maintain this patch.

(2) I haven't tested it much.

(3) This may be a dead end - I don't know what the future holds.  It's a good question - the concepts of this patch will remain valid, but pulling myrrd and/or moving to 1.2.x is Luca's decision.  I've never liked the myrrd stuff anyway but he says that version problems caused a lot of pain.

Right now?  My 2 cents?  1.2.x is too volatile.  1.0.50 is a good choice for ntop 3.2... Afterwards, sure.  Move to 1.2.x.

?s - keep this to ntop-dev.  And if you are playing w/ rrdtool 1.2.x you should be reading those lists too...
