winpcap isn't a compatibility layer - it's an implementation under windows
of the pcap API.

The point is that ntop works fine under Windows - it's what the #ifdef WIN32
code is all about, but the assumption in the code is the MS VC++ compiler.
To go beyond that to cygwin/MinGW/whatever has to be done very gently so as
not to break what's already working.

when you talked about the compatibility layer, I thought about WinPcap, not
MingW.
I agree that people doing serious development stay away from MingW.
Unfortunately for me, that's what I have; but fortunately, it worked
perfectly for me, and for a good many people too. There are some people out
there running ntop now that couldn't before, and that's a good thingC.
In the end, I think I made more good than bad - even if little good.
