Check out iperf. You need a pc at each end of the link. Use the udp test as it
measures loss and jitter and let's you set the rate/throughput of the test
stream.

Ntop is good for viewing who is doing what, not generating traffic for
validation tests.

Subject: [Ntop] Testing and Monitoring the uptime and speed of a wireless
network connection
Sent: Oct 24, 2010 8:52 PM

Hi, noob to ntop (and most things pertaining to network analysis), so please be
gentle... I'm interested in exploring the possibility of establishing a
wireless network connection between two buildings (this is not for me, but for
a friend's business).  I want to be able to evaluate the effectiveness of a
network link between a wireless router at the main building and a wireless
extender located at the second building (both off-the-shelf D-Link boxes).  I
want to be able to log the connection speed over this link over an extended
period of time, so that I can see if weather conditions adversely affect the
link.  I want to do this for at least two weeks before I can advise him if the
link is sufficiently fast and reliable (I need to see if a VOIP softphone is
feasible in the remote location, so having a rock-solid link is a necessity).
My question is twofold: 1) What program/tool would you use to generate a
constant stream of consistent traffic over the wireless link (in order to
measure the speed and/or reliability of the connection)? Would this require a
dedicated computer, or could a lightly-used "production" PC do the job without
causing it performance issues?  Would I also require another computer attached
to the extender at the other end, or can traffic be "received" by the wireless
extender alone? 2) (Assuming I can do step 1), is ntop the correct tool for
analyzing and logging this data?  If so, can you point me to any documentation
on doing so?  If not, any recommendations? Looking forward to your responses.
Thanks. Darren
