I would guess that you just don't have that much traffic on your
net, so that ntop cannot continuously display traffic, than that what you
described would be the correct behaviour.

Please try the latest snapshop ntop-beta-3 from www.ntop.org.

You need to use the "intop" binary for a ncurses tool, since the
"ntop" binary now is only for webserver mode. Just try:

intop -i <interface>

and then type "top" on the command prompt.
