Subject: ntop-2.0-1BETA.i386.rpm
As recommended by you, i download the latest version of ntop i.e. ntop-2.0-1BETA.i386.rpm.
Along with this i also download the following rpm's (because it need these rpms for installation):-
1. libpcap-0.6.2-9.i386.rpm
2. MySQL-shared-3.23.49-1.i386.rpm
3. openssl-0.9.6b-8.i386.rpm
4. ntop-2.0-1BETA.src.rpm (which is the source code)Now i one by one install these rpms by the command "rpm -ivh (name of rpm)"
I faced no problem in installing these 5 rpms.
Now when i executed the "/etc/rc.d/init.d/ntop start" comand to start the ntop it give s the following error:-
./usr/sbin/ntop: cd: /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/ntop: No such file or directory
gcc: main.o: No such file or directory
gcc: ./.libs/libntopreport.so: No such file or directory
gcc: ./.libs/libntop.so: No such file or directoryI just installed rpms stated above and did nothing beyond that and thereafter i want to start the ntop.
You stated below that i may have to edit "/etc/rc.d/init.d/ntop".How should i?????????

Blunt answer: NoThere is no support for 1.3 - I've never used it, and the developers who have worked on ntop since the beginning don't want to. 2.0 is a major improvement and the focus of current efforts. There is an ntop 2.0BETA rpm at http://rpmfind.net, but as it's a beta and there have been a lot of improvements in 2.0 post release, I can not recommend that for operational use. I have an email into the packager to see if we can get it updated.Unfortunately, all you can do today is to get the source I recommend and compile it from scratch. The good news is that there are clear instructions, and the documented process works quite well, esp. under RedHat. It's fast too. What I did, in fact, on my ntop-development box was to grab the 2.0BETA rpm and install it, then overlay the latest executables. The make install step will place the files in the expected places, and you will be off and running. (Remember you may need to edit /etc/init.d/ntop to reflect your network's settings - there are three or four examples in there...)The rpm has this:Name : ntop Relocations: (not relocateable)

achually i have installed everything.
Is there not any way so that i can start those services(which are not working) from the present installation schemes."Burton M. Strauss III" wrote:
1. Throw away the v1.3 source RPM. It's old, different and nobody is interested in offering any support for it.2. The RPM version - you don't say where you got it or what version it is... You also don't give us information about your system. What OS, what version, etc. As to rpms of ntop, the only one I'm aware of is a 2.0 BETA version )I emailed Hal last week, but I don't think we resolved updating it). If it is that version, it's old and there have been a lot of changes in how ntop works. Especially regarding traffic classification.Down load a snapshot from http://snapshot.ntop.org. I recommend the one from 15 Feb 2002... http://snapshot.ntop.org/tgz/ntop-02-02-15.tgzUntar it and follow the directions in docs/BUILD-NTOP.txt After you've finished all the steps, run "make install" to install ntop in /usr/bin/ntop and /usr/share/ntop/xxxx-----Burton-----Original Message-----Hi Sir,

You
installed the source rpm. WHY? No harm done, but it wasn't in any of my
instructions... I strongly suggest you go to the Linux Documentation
Project or another source and do a lot of reading about Linux - you are
obviously not knowledgeable enough to follow clear albeit
abbreviated directions. And I just don't care enough to spell it
out in any more detail.
Did
you download the current ntop source snapshot and follow the instructions to
build ntop - docs/BUILD-NTOP.txt? It does not sound like
it.
Did you follow my directions - they are
pretty clear:As I
said:
"Down load a snapshot from http://snapshot.ntop.org. I recommend the one from 15 Feb 2002... http://snapshot.ntop.org/tgz/ntop-02-02-15.tgz Untar it and follow the directions in
docs/BUILD-NTOP.txt After you've finished all the steps, run "make install" to install
ntop in /usr/bin/ntop and
/usr/share/ntop/xxxx"
Also,
as I said:
"Remember you may need to edit /etc/init.d/ntop to reflect
your network's settings - there are three or four examples in
there..."
