No, it won't - a 100BaseT switch will still be limited to 100 Mbps *per port*.
Some switches - not all, but certainly the higher end units - have a switch fabric that allows them to handle more than 100Mbps of agregated traffic, but are limited to 100Mbps on any port. That is a session between say ports 1 and 3 can hit 100Mbps simultaneously to a second 100Mbps session between ports 2 and 4. When you invoke the monitoring mode, you are forcing the entire switch bandwidth out one port. However since many switches are store&forward instead of cut-through, it *may* be able to keep up with an occasional burst of traffic, as long as the average is below the port capacity and the buffer isn't exceeded. Traffic that is being sent to the monitoring port in excess of the capacity of that port is usually dropped. It should NOT slow down the switch on other ports. I doesn't impact performance for Cisco switches - See http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/41.html#archXL. I'm not sure about others. I found a reference to setting monitoring ("span" "mirror" etc.) mode for a number of vendors. But the URL is very long. Do a google search for "site:elronsoftware.com wi6038", the document is titled "REFERENCE: Configuring a Switch to Monitor All Traffic" -----Burton ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tue, 9 Jul 2002 15:25:41 +0200 > >... this option may slow-down switch ! ! ! > > > > "Serge Maandag" > <[EMAIL PROTECTED] Do: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > landnet.nl> DW: > Wysane przez: Temat: RE: [Ntop] general >network monitoring > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > > 02-07-2002 11:13 > Odpowiedz do ntop > > > > > > >try tcpdump to see whether there is any traffic flowing past your >interface. >Are you on a switch perhaps?
