Friends,

Forgive me for an offtopic question. At least I think it is offtopic. I
browsed the archive and did not see too much about compiling. Probably
because you all know so much more than I do. I also read the FAQ and the
FAQ at http://snapshot.ntop.org/faq.php

I hope I did not miss the answer. I am a mouth breathing, knuckle
dragging, cretin. If I knew what I am doing I would be running <insert
your favorite OS here>.

Trying to compile I get:

Step 6. Looking for required GPLed libraries....

checking for LBL Packet Capture Library (required package)... found in
/usr/local
     checking for gdbm.h... no
checking for gdbm_open in -lgdbm... no
checking for gdbm_close in -lgdbm... no
                  *** FATAL ERROR ***

I do have gdbm, but I installed it with fink so it is in /sw

     [fred:/tmp/ntop-2.1.2/ntop] root# locate gdbm
     /sw/include/gdbm.h
     /sw/lib/libgdbm.2.0.0.dylib
     /sw/lib/libgdbm.2.dylib
     /sw/lib/libgdbm.a
     /sw/lib/libgdbm.dylib
     /sw/lib/libgdbm.la
     /sw/lib/python2.2/lib-dynload/gdbm.so
     /sw/lib/python2.2/test/test_gdbm.py
     /sw/lib/python2.2/test/test_gdbm.pyc
     /sw/lib/python2.2/test/test_gdbm.pyo
     /sw/libexec/rep/0.14/powerpc-apple-darwin/gdbm.la
     /sw/libexec/rep/0.14/powerpc-apple-darwin/gdbm.so
     /sw/libexec/rep/0.14/powerpc-apple-darwin/rep/io/db/gdbm.la
     /sw/libexec/rep/0.14/powerpc-apple-darwin/rep/io/db/gdbm.so

I'm thinking I could install gdbm from source so it goes where ntop expects
it or I could create links (not that I would know which files to link.

What is the easiest way to get this working? Can I tell the compiler where
to find the libraries? Will ntop need them later and be able to find them.

I hate not knowing what I'm doing :-(

Many thanks,

Dan
