Performace is mostly an issue of memory - ntop needs enough so it does NOT swap.  Read 
up in the list's back traffic on this.

ntop sniffs in promiscuous mode, using libpcap to intercept the traffic at the 
interface level - it doesn't affect the packets nor any other consumers of same.
