I am writing to thank you for your help and say that this issue is
nothing whatsover to do with ntop 2.1.90

FWIW, it had to do with the way I installed rrdtool: rrdtools configure
chooses /usr/local/rrdtool-1.1.0 for a prefix and doesn't build a shared
library.

After ./configure --enable-shared=yes and updating LDPATH or ldconfig
with /usr/local/rrdtool-1.1.0/lib/,  all is well.
