Interesting... with me, it usually fails as it daemonizes and that's usually
a library cache conflict (i.e. I compile to update something, it starts and
tracelessly dies, probably because the library in ld.so.cache isn't
available).

What's different under cron? Shouldn't be any different, except the pwd
value might be something odd.

When it's hung up, can you attach to it via gdb and see where it's looping?

gdb /usr/bin/ntop pid

followed by the usual bt full, info stack, info thread etc.

Subject: [Ntop] Bug report with 2.1.90. One installation (of 6) hangs at
start: 100% CPU.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am writing to report a potential problem with ntop-2.1.90 on FreeBSD
4.7-RELEASE-p7.

I have six (6) Ntop collectors on low end Intel/FreeBSD boxes. One and
only one, fails to start properly when periodicallu restarted by cron.

The symptoms are

1. Ntop process uses all or a lot of CPU

4 A manual restart clears the problem.
The only difference between the manual restart from the periodic is that
the former runs under cron. A manual restart seems to work reliably.

Since this only happens on one of the six collectors, it may be peculiar
to that collector. I will recompile and try again. I haven't seen this
behaviour from any ntop before.

The config details are below,

Thank you,

Yours sincerely.

'...No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the
continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a
manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes
me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know
for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee...'
