You would have to write a 'protocol analyzer' - see the examples for dhcp,
ftp, http, etc. in pbuf.c

To do that, you'll need to know the format of the chat packets (so you can
figure out which chat is which).

The virtual host stuff in http is probably a useful model.

Subject: [Ntop] Network Traffic from an application
Importance: High

Hello,

we are struggeling with something where i think you could answer it very
quickly.

We have multiple servers running SuSe 8.2 and we are running a java
based Chat called DigiChat. This chat works on Port 8396 ( we can choose
the port during initialization, default is 8396 ). There are multiple
Chats running and this is defined through a site ID. So we have multiple
chats running and we need a traffic reporting tool for this. When we use
netstat -an we see that all clients are connected to the port 8396 but
they are all in different chats. We need to have a traffic reporting for
each individual chat.

After contacting the supplier of the DigiChat system they have confirmed
that they do not have any kind of reporting implemented and they will
take this as an enhancement request for future versions but not in the
next release. The next release will come out in 5 months which will not
have traffic reporting and the release after this will come out in
possible 1 year or 1,5 years from now on. This is unacceptable.

So my question would be if there would a way of using the NTOP traffic
reporting software for our specific problem ? Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Pseudomizer
