Thanks for the info. The reason why I am asking about particulars in the suse buils is 
that I get this error while compiling from source:

ERROR: libpng header or library routines are missing
*           (yes means it was found, no means it was not found)
*
*              png.h...yes
*              png_read_info() in -lpng...

all my libpng files are present and I've tried many combos of --with-libpng-lib 
commands but it always hang here. Was wondering if anyone els has run into this on 
suse? On  redhat and sun I have not seen this problem.
